The Guardian - Ownership, Values and Belief

Why might audiences consume newspaper?

Uses and gratifications:
- to find out information about what is new in the world today e.g. the football
- for social integration - to talk with others about currently big or trending topics e.g. Brexit

Owners are not expected to interfere directly with the newspaper. This is because it can destroy the newspaper's credibility.

Editors will always deny that their owner interferes with their content. However, owners would always appoint editors based on whether they share the same political views.

The Scott Trust exists to:

- ensure the editorial independence of newspapers
- appoint their editors
- ensure the newspaper continue their liberal traditions and do not affiliate to any political party
- promote the cause of freedom of the press meaning anyone must be free to set up a newspaper and newspapers must not be censored or controlled by the government. This allows for democratic freedom of speech and expression

The Guardian's Values and Beliefs:

- liberal values as they are owned by the Scott Trust whose job it is to ensure that newspapers are independent and liberal
- the target audience are middle class 'progressives' who read this newspaper for its liberal viewpoint
- they celebrate and cover stories of different genders, races, ethnicities and sexualities again showing they are liberal
- liberal values: tolerance, fairness and progress through media language, which makes it mainstream
- collaborate with readers and others to have greater impact
- report fairly on people as well as power and find things out

Scott Trust

- believe in the rights of each individual (human rights)
- that all individuals are of equal worth (democracy)
- all people of the world are of equal worth
- promote democracy (equality) and human rights
- celebrate individuality, diversity, tolerance and allowing opposing points of view
- care for people no matter where in the world they live in (internationalism)
- be open-minded about change

The Guardian/Observer reflects the Scott Trusts values because they celebrate and care for everyone no matter their demographic. They thoroughly believe in equality and report fairly no matter what.

How is The Guardian funded? Is there a paywall? Why or why not?

Open to everyone, regardless of how much they earn. There is no paywall because they want it to feel more accessible to their buyers, but people get to choose if they would like to contribute to fund The Guardian to help them carry on producing newspapers efficiently.

How has the paper responded to declining newspaper sale?

You can now access the newspaper on more modern platforms. This includes The Guardian's app, website and social media platform.

What might be the effects of the ownership on the paper's content?
