Component 2: Section B - Documentary
Amy (Kim Longinotto)
Focused Areas
1. Film forms
2. Meaning and response
3. Contexts
4. Critical debates
5. Filmmaker's theories
A documentary film is a motion picture intended to document history whilst informing spectators on the 'reality' of a non-fictional person.
Kim Longinotto
- British documentary filmmaker, known for directing films that depict victims of female oppression or discrimination; an observational filmmaker
- Longinotto occassionally tutors students at the National Film and Television School on women's lives
- her typical techniques are long cuts and capturing the most extraordinary aspects of the subjects life
Nick Broomfield
- his films focus on the strange and dark side of lives
- attracted to working with unique and perhaps difficult people as a challenge
- his work varies on different celebrities, whether politcal figures such as Margaret Thatcher or pop culture figures such as Kurt Cobain
- he appears in his own films. as we can regularly see the sound boom in the frame, as well as we are very aware of the camera
- his films are completely shot from a subjective viewpoint, forcing the biased opinion so we can understand what he is trying to achieve in his films
- works with small crews and budgets
In the Grammy scene in 'Amy', Asif Kapadia o uses documented footage to capture Amy's live reaction to accepting the award. Whilst Kapadia aims to make Amy's behaviour feel natural, the overt use of cameras and a live audience with Amy at the stage makes it difficult to capture completely unaltered behaviour. Since Amy knows she is being recorded, and watched by (what is now created by Longinotto) a diegetic audience, she changes her natural behaviour to be entertaining to all her spectators, whilst also making an impression for those who don't know her well. For example, Amy leans into the microphone for everyone to hear, when she speaks to her Dad who is front row to pay respect to Tony Belling. Amy does this to humble herself as a person, as she knows her award is on the greatest scale possible in her industry. However, she also criticises Justin Timberlake's song title choice of 'What Goes Around Comes Around', perhaps to reinforce her feisty personality.
